Essential Beach Safety Guidelines
01
Check Flag Warnings
Understand beach flag colors: green (safe), yellow (caution), red (dangerous), purple (marine life). More beach flag info can be found here. The Town of Pine Knoll Shores often posts flag updates here during warmer months in addition to flags at public beach access points.
02
Supervise Children
Keep constant visual contact with children. Use life jackets for weak swimmers.
03
Sun Protection
Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen every two hours and after swimming. Wear protective clothing.
04
Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration in the sun and heat.
05
Know Rip Currents
If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore until free, then swim back to beach at an angle. Click here , here, and here to learn more about rip current safety.
Tide Information & King Tides
Daily Tide Times
Find daily tide times and tables here to plan your beach activities around optimal water conditions.
Understanding King Tides
Learn more about King Tides here. King Tides may result in narrower than normal beach strands and in some cases, localized flooding in low-lying areas.
High Tide
Good for swimming and water activities
Low Tide
Ideal for beachcombing and exploring tide pools
King Tides
Watch for narrower beaches and possible flooding in low-lying areas
Sea Turtle Conservation
We are fortunate to be in an area with regular nesting spots for Sea Turtles. Sea Turtle nests will be roped off on the beach from mid-Spring through mid-Summer, with baby Sea Turtles usually hatching in mid-late summer.
Nesting Season
Mid-Spring through mid-Summer
  • Watch for roped-off nesting areas
  • Keep distance from marked nests
  • Avoid disturbing sand near markers
Hatching Season
Mid-late Summer
  • Baby turtles emerge at night
  • Turn off beachfront lights
  • Never touch or interfere with hatchlings
How You Can Help
Protect our sea turtles
  • Fill all holes before leaving the beach
  • Remove beach equipment at night
  • Report activity: 252-515-0704
Important: Please fill holes on the beach before leaving if digging in sand. This helps preserve sea turtle nesting and hatching patterns (and helps prevent human injuries).
